Galapagos Penguin (Spheniscus mendiculus)
|
||
About this photo:This is the only penguin found north of the equator, and that just barely. There is some dispute whether this is a separate species, or a sub-species of Humboldt's Penguin (Spheniscus humboldti). Most authorities consider them to be distinct, though they appear very similar. The penguins probably were brought to the islands by the Humboldt Current, which usually flows to the islands. We had a chance to swim with these penguins during one of our snorkeling outings. |
